the Rainbow Doula philosophy:

Doulas with Rainbow Doula DC have experience with many different expecting parents, including folks who are lesbian, gay, trans, non-binary, and queer. We support single, monogamous, and polyamorous people in the Washington DC area, and are proudly trained in supporting survivors of trauma and abuse.

We strive to create a supportive environment during this crucial process of birth and new parenthood. We are also adept at navigating hospital systems that may be unfriendly to folks outside the gender binary.

We also offer post-operative services for gender-affirming surgeries. Our transition doulas are skilled at hospital navigation and promoting healing.

What is a Doula

What is a Doula?

Doulas provide four key areas of support: informational, emotional, physical, and advocacy.

The doula-client relationship starts a few months before labor, where doulas learn how to best support the choices the birthing person makes. On birthing day, a doula is there to provide comfort measures, physical and emotional support, and guidance so you and your partner can focus on what matters most.

Why should I hire a Doula?

Evidenced-based birthing supports doula work. On average, people who use doulas are more likely to:

- experience vaginal birth versus a cesarian (source)

- experience shorter labor (source)

- have newborns with higher Apgar scores (source)

- birth without an epidural (source)

- report lower stress during labor (source)

- report higher satisfaction with overall birth experience (source)
